ASATU declares its position on Anambra Guber Election .....says all agitations must be made within the ambits of the Law.
In a Press Statement released by the ASATU National
President, Chief Alex Onukwue, the state Town Unions Association applauded the
courage of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in bringing to national glare
the issues of Southeast marginalization but stressed the need to act lawfully.
According to Chief Onukwue, ASATU in its view
regards the call for Anambra state Election Boycott by the IPOB, as a product
of misinformation.
“In ASATU’s understanding, the Election of November
the 18th 2017 is an opportunity for the people of Anambra state to
freely, on their own, elect their governor who will join other governors and
leaders of the Southeast in fighting the Igbo course”
“In this case, ASATU considers the call for boycott
of the governorship election as, not only unfortunate and misinformed, but
certainly a call for a shot in one’s own foot, a call for a goal in one’s own
net and accordingly, a call to be seen as counterproductive and a dance to the gallery”.
He called on Anambrarians and at large, Ndigbo to
use the occasion of Anambra Gubernatorial exercise to prove to Nigerians the
resilience nature of the Igbo race by assisting to ensure that the governorship
election holds as scheduled, this is even as he appeals to Igbo leaders of
taught to ensure the youths are fed with the right information always.
“We wish to express confidence in the IPOB
Leadership to see things in their true perspectives in line with an Igbo adage
that says that a man whose is on fire does not chase rats. Anambra state is of great
importance to Ndigbo, as other states in the Southeast and, it is of the utmost
importance that Igbo Stakeholders, especially the politician, do Ndigbo some
good by refraining from inclinations that are targeted at distorting the facts
of the peace, good order, security of life and property and signs of wellbeing
across the state”.
While throwing weight behind Nigeria’s quest for
peaceful co-existence, development and true greatness, ASATU expresses believe
that devolution of Power to the states remains the panacea to the nation’s
problems, thereby encouraging Nigerians to lend their support for
restructuring.
On the Kaduna declaration, ASATU aligns its position
to the efforts of Ohaneze Ndigbo and other Igbo Leaders in calming the storm
moved by Arewa Youths on Igbo to quit Northern Nigeria by October the 1st 2017.
“It becomes imperative, however, that the Federal
Government ensures that their promises of safety to Ndigbo in the North are not
just another round of rhetoric and political sweet talks”.
The Association describes as unfortunate the last
Sunday’s bloodletting incident that occurred at Saint Philip Catholic Parish,
Ozubulu in Ekwusigo local government area and consoles its member, the
President-General of Ozubulu and the enter community.
“ASATU condemns this dastardly act and we deeply
condole with the families of the victims while hoping that justice will be done
in the matter”
End.
