Tricycle Riders popularly, known as Keke Napep
operators commercializing Onitsha-Owerri road, have staged a peaceful protest
against multiple taxation meted on them by the Anambra state government’s
revenue agents.
Sited around Mgbemena axis of Onitsha-Owerri road
last week, the commercial Tricycle Riders were carrying placards inscribed in
various words such as “Hoodlums have taken over Anambra state”, “No more
collection of money from passengers with loads”, “Army help us provide solution
that will remedy our situation”, “Obiano stop mal-treating us”, “Agboro should
stop beating keke riders”, “No more choo lum ife” among others.
Narating their odeal to Newsmen, the state coordinator
and a member of the group, Messrs Anthony Ogaraonye and Emeka Ohaekerem listed
Messrs Sylvester Obiora, Jimmy Okonkwo, Wilfred Ezike, Mike Onyekwena, Dubem
Nwadiogbu and Pat Ezenwa to be responsible for imposing illegal tickets on
them.
They also listed KKAWAPU Amalgamated Union, Ministry
of Local government and Somatina Enterprises
as the genuine Tickets they are obligated to pay while Onitsha Ado N’idu,
Anambra State loca Government Tolls, ASWAMA among many others as illegal ones
which costs them about two thousand naira daily(#2000) instead of three
hundred(#300) as approved by the state government.

Responding, some of the accused, the Anambra state
Financial Secretary and Secretary of the Board of Trutees of KKAWAPU
Amalgamated Tricycle Union, Messrs Onyekwena and Obiora respectively denied the
allegation suggesting that government should hand over the Union’s revenue
generation to the Union instead of non-Keke Opereators who deal on the illegal
ticketing.
Also speaking, a concerned citizen and the Anambra
south Leader of the Movement for Actualization of the Sovereign state of
Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Arinze Igbani observes that the maltreatment on Keke
Operators is applicable to Ekwuluobia, Nnewi and Awada,Obosi.
Chief Igbani assured the agitators of federal government’s
attention to ensure the system is sanitized.
