Bishop Johnson Ekwe, Niger West, Anglican Communion
The Anglican Bishop of Niger West, Right Reverend Johnson Ekwe has charged Christians in Nigeria to look up to God in the face of prevailing economic downturn plaguing the Nation.
Right Reverend Ekwe gave the charge while presenting his Presidential Address at the just concluded First Session of the Third Synod of the Diocese at Holy Trinity Anglican parish, Igboezulu Aguleri in Anambra East local government area of Anambra state.
The Bishop while reflecting on the present economic situation and the perceived ethnic crisis looming in the country, stated that in times like now, people should seek the face of God whose Power supersedes all earthly options.
"beloved in the lord, having explored and explained our theme, "The Power of His Might: Walking in Victory", let us draw the following conclusion; Is not our life a warfare? Yes we struggle with the common calamities of human life. Again, is the religion we propagate which is Christianity much more a warfare? the answer is yes, it is so, for we struggle with the opposition of the powers of darkness. This shows that we as Christians should apply ourselves to do our work and duty as Christian Soldiers".
Also in his Address, the Bishop who aired his stance on issues playing out in the state and nation at large commended Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state for his manner of governance which he says tends to transform the state for the betterment of her citizens, this was even as he called on Anambra residents to troop out en masse to exercise their franchise as registered voters in the November 18th Governorship election in the state.
"To say that we are pleased with the state of affair in Anambra state is merely stating the obvious, Quite evidently, Anambra is head and shoulder above the rest of the states. Where many states in the country owe workers salaries, on average, six to ten months arrears of salaries, Anambra state civil servants are paid as and when due. Also worthy of note is the atmosphere of relative calm, devoid of violence and crime which parades the entire horizon. We hereby commend Executive Governor of the State, Chief Willie Obiano for the dogged, resilience and committed way he is toiling to turn Anambra around for better".
Bishop Ekwe among enormous social vices he listed, laid emphasis on the need for federal government to disband the uncountable Police Checkpoints across the Southeast highways, describing as terrible the excesses of men of the Nigeria Police Force in the region.
"The terrible thing that no meaningful check of any sort is conducted at these checkpoints instead they serve as avenues to extort the commercial and private vehicle users. these extortion have become really worrisome because there are all kinds of reports of harrowing experiences that people are taken through at these checkpoints. it is quite disturbing that those checkpoints are not found in other parts of the country, even in places with higher records of volatility and criminal tendencies; We call on the Federal Government to disband the police checkpoints on the federal roads in the South East and deploy the police to more effective means of maintaining security that will not involve a deliberate extortion of innocent road operators".
The 2017 Synod of the Niger West Diocese which is themed "The Power of His Might (Walking in Victory)", had in attendance about fifteen serving and retired Bishops of the Communion including the Archbishop, Province of the Niger and Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Most Reverend Christian Efobi; and the Traditional Ruler of Aguleri Kingdom, Igwe Christopher Idigo and his cabinet members among whom was the Special Adviser to the governor on Political Matters, Chief Chinedu Obidigwe while adoption of the Bishop's Charge and special choir rendition formed the high-points of the occasion.
Very Delight News.
